Dr Derran M Govender does ECG tests at his practice in Durban North. An ECG (electrocardiogram) records the electrical activity of your heart. It takes a few minutes, and the results are available straight away.
What an ECG checks
An ECG can show:
- your heart rate and rhythm
- irregular heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation
- signs of a previous or current heart attack
- signs of reduced blood flow to the heart
- thickening of the heart muscle, often from high blood pressure
When you might need an ECG
- chest pain or tightness
- palpitations or an irregular heartbeat
- shortness of breath
- dizziness or fainting
- high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- as part of a full medical check-up
- before starting certain medicines
If you have severe chest pain right now, go to the nearest emergency unit or call an ambulance.
What happens during an ECG
Small sticky pads are placed on your chest, arms and legs, and the machine records your heart’s electrical activity for a few seconds. It’s painless and takes about five minutes.

Frequently asked questions
What does a normal ECG mean?
A normal ECG means your heart rate, rhythm and electrical activity are within the normal range at the time of the test. It doesn’t rule out every heart problem, so Dr Govender interprets it together with your symptoms and other results.
What does an abnormal ECG mean?
An abnormal ECG shows a change in your heart’s rhythm or electrical activity. Some changes are harmless and common, while others need further tests. Dr Govender explains your result and arranges further tests or a referral to a cardiologist when needed.
