Dr Derran M Govender offers confidential STD testing and treatment at his practice in Durban North. Most sexually transmitted infections are treated on the same day, based on your symptoms, so you don’t wait for lab results before starting treatment. Blood tests include HIV testing, syphilis testing and hepatitis B testing.
Common STI symptoms
- unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
- pain or burning when passing urine
- sores, ulcers or blisters in the genital area
- pain during sex
- lower abdominal pain in women
- pain or swelling in the testicles
Many STIs cause no symptoms at all, so it’s worth getting checked after unprotected sex or a new partner.
Same-day treatment
Dr Govender treats STIs using syndromic management, the approach recommended in South Africa’s national STI guidelines. Treatment is based on your symptoms, and a combination of antibiotics covers the common infections that cause them. It means treatment starts on the same day, without waiting days for lab results, and your partner can be treated too.
Blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B
These infections need a blood test to diagnose and are treated differently, so they are tested for separately. A rapid HIV test gives a result in about 15 minutes, and the other blood tests are sent to the laboratory.
